Extra Plans and Refinements
I thought the "Welcomes You" on all the posters wasnt enough to really push in the viewers face that everyone is welcome and really pull them in. I decided to come up with a couple more quotes to write on a few of the posters. Help drive home the idea of fun and everybody being welcome. I think "Best show on Earth" could suit Madame Etolarac as she is presented as the circus owner, therefore showing she is proud and confident of what she has created. I also felt that "fun for all ages" could fit for Mr Cadeys poster as that poster includes a child already visually. The other two i will decide when i have created the other posters to see what space there is depending on the shape/layout of the poster. Last of all, i think i should include the word "Free" in one of the quotes such as "Free for the entire family" as people love free things and would draw more people in.
I wrote out the possible order of the posters from light to dark appearance. (A few could be swapped as long as the light to dark linear pattern still shows.) I wanted the posters to start with light colours to look friendly, eye catching and fun, just how most ADs work. Then gets darker to present the deceit and lies to the viewer as they have already followed down the path to find out they are not included in the "welcomes all".
I wrote out the quotes from above under the poster that i could apply them to. I then wrote out colour schemes i had already thought of for the posters to acknowledge any gaps and make sure i am not overusing a certain colour too much. So each poster has its own identity. This proved difficult when there is only a certain amount of colours (not including individually shades to simplify this process). I wrote in pencil the few i am not certain of and will be able to visually judge better once i have created the posters i have already decided the colour scheme for. This definitely helped me understand the visual process more of each poster.
Next i looked into settling the shape design as inspired by my artist Natalee Miller and her trait card design that i have been picking out over the process of the last few weeks. I really enjoyed the way she incorporated shapes into her designs by either border or no border, just using block colours to create a shapes outline. As somebody who is really drawn to clean lines like this it really captured me visually.
I drew out a few different shapes on this paper to explore my options. I wanted them fairly simple. This process seriously reminded me of GCSE Maths which was dreadful to have to remember. Anyway, i wrote next to each shape which poster they will be applied to and even how each character will be placed in them, for instance: Luna Larac will be coming out of the bottom square as if its a portal and the back square connected to it is just a background. Unlike the hour glass shape which will just be placed behind Gazelle as purely a background detail.
At the bottom i wrote out that five posters will have explicit border lines. Then three posters will just have the shape but not outline. These last three will be the darker posters, i think this could convey the lie as well as if the manufacture ran out of money to get all the details right, showing the truth that none of it is real through the lack of details and inconsistent. As people who lie find it difficult to keep it consistent. Furthermore, these last few posters will include the shadow of Zelroth (the real ringmaster conducting all of this) as shown in my earlier sketches.
Last of all, looking back over this i have decided that another poster design needs striped curtains in the background as the only poster with it is the last one. I think it needs to show up in an earlier poster so the bright colours of the stripes connect, as the last poster also shows the dirty sides of the curtains. Originally this striped design was in the Gazelle original sketch. However i have developed and refined that design to how it works with the triangular shape. This includes leaves growing inside the shape to show growth as if that is part of the future she is telling the customer. I will also connect the yellow bird to the yellow border of the shape.
Therefore, i could incorporate the striped curtains in either Luna Laracs poster or Creatures. I think it would work best for creature right now as Larac colour scheme already includes red in her costume design, she wouldnt stand out with a red background. However, i picture Creature is softer colours, possibly pink which may clash with the red. Again the blood in her poster wont stand out so much due to the background swallowing it. I could alter Laracs colour scheme instead of red it could be blue, white, yellow? Maybe blue and orange to connect to the background colour scheme for Kaens? Or i could paint Creature in a soft green, with striped background so it does disguise the blood a little to be less threatening as it is a part of the "lighter" poster sides the friendly appearance.
