Influences: American Horror Story

Freakshow season-

Artist, Kyle Cooper is the title designer for American Horror Story. Interview is about the creation of each title sequence and what goes into it. I will focus on Freakshow obviously for the circus theme and posters. The title sequence does include this mini circus which is incredibly cute. I would love to have a go at creating those white tents with sticks holding them up.
Other than the mini circus tent, I was mostly interested in the style of posters they used. Freakshow was set in 1952, and the poster styles look very similar to the style and colour choices of real 1950s circus posters. They had the cartoon style with rich pallet colours mainly using, red, green and blue. Thus, creating an inviting appearance as you walk into the tent despite its horrifying clown face.
This is similar to the style used in the film The Greatest Showman, set in 1850s. The posters again are vibrant and focusing on the different freakshow performers. The AHS posters are very different to the promotional posters used for the series.

These images and colour pallets intrigue me a lot more. The deep-water blue reminds me of Coraline’s hair and dark background scenes. Additionally, the contrast the rich blue to a blood red. This create a warm and cold feeling, usually using the red to draw you to the performer whilst the blue background has shadows, creating a mysterious even mouldy appearance. I do adore how all the posters show a connection through the colour palette and simple background. I hope to create a similar style with my posters, using colour scheme and borders. Additionally, the AHS posters use different models for the posters to represent the characters in the series, as to not reveal which actor plays who. Therefore, giving hints on what characters to expect but still keeping mystery. However, they also may do this to create more sex appeal by using female models, even for the male characters.
