Madame Etolorac Poster

Due to the posters printing out with a white border, i felt the outside gold border i created on the experiment no longer worked and i abandoned the idea of an outside border like that. I think this worked out best as the shapes used in the posters create a small border with the writing around the edges acting as another border. However, i still felt this poster lacked something without the gold so i added these small details under the writing. I stayed with the branch border as it ties in with the use of nature throughout the series, from Gazelles leaf background to Weeping Soul himself and the flower he holds. I also think it works here as Etolorac isnt the real ringmaster, as Zelroth is just presenting her that way, so the branch border makes her look like a painting on the wall, instead of having the border behind like the others, or Kaen breaking out of their border.

Although in the experiment, her skin became patchy due to printing out the original drawing on normal paper that wasnt for painting. I decided to go back to the basic 1950s magazine illustrations where one block of colour was used with limited shading to enhance features. I thought this would help tie it into the old circus posters that i found during my research, also shown in AHS freakshow posters. Additionally, playing into the painting on the wall appearance. I do think the jaw line is too square creating a rectangle appearance to her head but its not too big of a deal as i didnt follow the 1950s illustration template in facial features as Etolorac is based off of myself and i think no one would notice that well if i minimised features to fit the 1950s standards.

I used a biro pen to outline some features such as her eyes, the leaf folds and around the inside of the branch border. I decided to not do around the outside of the branches so they appear to stand out from Etolorac as if she is a flat painting inside the frame. I stuck mainly to the original experiment as i think everything tied together well and was balanced. For instance the colour of her top is similar to the rusty orange of Kaens poster. The purple/grey stripes tie in with Gazelles lighter colour and Mr Cadeys darker colour used in poster. Additionally the stripes pick up on the striped curtains used in Weeping Souls poster. I think i will try and use one more stripe pattern in another poster, possibly Creatures, to balance out and show a thread throughout the posters. I believe this will work best in Creatures poster as i feel her poster design is a little underdeveloped compared to the other last two that are more developed.

I mixed gold metallic paint with some yellow gouache so it wasnt see through and added the little border details and some gold to the leaf details so they can catch the light too. Continuing with the black pen, i outlined the border details. I am not fond of the loose writing at the bottom of the posters but i think that may be me just not liking my handwriting. If i could develop this i would connect the name to the message at the bottom so instead of the gold diamond in the middle it reads:

 "Madame Etolorac
 Weclomes You to
               the
 Best Show on Earth!".

That way this as the first poster it is full on inviting the person as the rest of the posters follow on encouraging them to come.

The finished piece with PVA glue applied. Made sure to do the edges and to wash my brush between different areas of different colours to prevent as much colour bleed as possible. I have all of my posters on my magnetic board to help flatten the curled up edges, once i have completed them all i will place them under a book together to help flatten them further before actually presenting them in my house.
