Sketches: Zelroth and Dr Salem
I decided to design the strange figure in the woods from the ghosts. I thought he could be the ring master for the circus. I wanted him to lack identity, an unknown figure almost like a ghost shadow to convey how the circus is just empty in real life and all the poster promises are lies. I gave him a top hat to show how he is the ring leader with the usual red coat outfits they wear. The sad face with the tear would look incredibly odd when the poster promises fun when the leader of that circus clearly is not.
I have now deigned a new poster that i feel would work better to be the owner of the circus. However, i could still use Zelroth in other posters, hidden in the background or maybe just his shadow on the wall to keep the idea of him in use. I could also create a small figure version of him out of clay, to place inside the actual tent. To show how his presence all along was there in the posters, the lies that his circus is welcoming and that someone else is in charge. Then you arrive at the circus that is tiny and empty, except from Zelroth.
I could make Salems hands be wearing gloves but then they will blend too much into the dark. Additionally showing human hands will appear more trusting. I came back and refined this drawings by adding purple biro outlines and the circle borders around each arm as if his hands are coming through a portal. This decision was made later when i worked out the style of borders i wanted to do for my posters and how i sometimes want the performer to break out of them.
Additionally, a change i would make to the drawing would be to make the grapes look mouldy and add flies. Only to the grapes and not the eyes, which are bloody and freshly pulled from somewhere unknown.
