My process of looking at environments to display my work, from collaborating with Mae in the Studio to working from home due to lock down. Began with my initial thoughts written in my sketchbook and measuring the space me and Mae decided on. I took photos of all the places i considered and did a write up for my folder.
Environment
When thinking of my final major I instantly began looking at
environments to present my work and understand what space, lighting and
atmosphere I had to utilise. At first when considering a collaborative
environment with Mae on the circus tent we looked around the studio together to
discuss each other’s thoughts.
Some areas had already been
claimed by other people, which was unfortunate as the dark space would be a
perfect atmosphere and circular shape for the circus tent. However, with the
space that was available was the space in the middle of the FAD space and open
space in front of the messy table. I was quite fond of using the open space in
FAD as I could place my posters and arrows throughout the studio and college,
leading people to the tent. However, Mae wasn’t fond for the idea, she said the
tent would be in the way of other peoples work even though everyone could walk
around it.
As it was a collaborative environment, I respected her decision and considered other areas that caught my
attention. The outside area by FAD intrigued me as I find the way the bushes
creating little hide outs creepy but explorative for a kid. Therefore would be
perfect for a little inviting circus tent hidden behind the leaves. The biggest
fault for placing our work outside would be the weather, so would still need to
consider an inside area just incase. However, the slight chance of weather
being bad put Mae off the outside area. Which now that I think about it,
despite having a great atmosphere and natural surroundings for a circus tent,
it would have been difficult to make sure our tent was fully supported if it
was hand made fabric put together by us.
The idea of supporting the
scraps of fabric to create a tent turned us to this closed off corner of the
room. We could use some of the boards to hold the fabric up for shape as we
connect the point of the tent to the ceiling. It is also a dark area and spacious.
Enough inside. We measured the walls and height creating a drawn plan in our
sketchbook. We would have to take down the side half board on the right. Then
we could have a little trail leading out from the curtain opening in the tent.
This was quite an exciting idea to explore and make work, especially as a collaborative piece. Unfortunately college was closed due to COVID-19, forcing
me to work from home and having to replan my environment to present my work.

One of the first things I considered when at
home was that I could still possibly place posters outside. However, with many
people going out in the day for their exercise and most walls belonging to
people’s houses or front walls. I wasn’t comfortable with the idea of placing
my work without permission. I could make small stickers to place on lampposts
instead or in other public areas like the park fence.
Other than that, I considered about two places
to lay out my work in my house. My house is very narrow/ small rooms so I could
place posters and arrows directing people to the small tent through my hallways,
either leading upstairs or through my house to the top of my garden.

(Did take more photos to show where i could place each poster but could not fit them all here)
I prefer the idea of forcing people to trek up
two flight of stairs to reach an underwhelming lie. However, the space upstairs
isn’t a good fit to create an atmosphere, or even place the mini tent in an
angle that pulls the eye to the tent instead of the door or desk. Overall, the
outside area fits more as it would be the natural environment for a real tent.
Additionally, I could take photos throughout the day to see how shadows and
nightfall change the environment. As long as my dog doesn’t tamper with the
small tent on the floor. When I actually create the pieces, I could re do these
environment photos in the garden to see where the idea fits best and most
efficiently.
(i have a few videos to capture the noise but am struggling to upload them here)
